Welcome to our first ever Muscle Monday post! I thought we should start with one that everyone loves. The ultimate glamour muscle. People spend hours at the gym trying to build them up to have an impressive chest and a strong bench press.

This is a large, hardworking muscle that does a lot of different actions and it tends to get overworked in the gym. This can lead to postural imbalances and in extreme cases give one a hunched over “caveman” look. It’s important to follow a workout program that balances chest work and back work such as rowing to prevent this, but it can really help to supplement your routine with stretching and massage as well.

This muscle is particularly important to work on if you’re a student or if your job involves sitting at a desk. People tend to hunch their shoulders forward while working or studying which can shorten this muscle and lead to the aforementioned postural imbalance. A stronger back pulls the shoulders back into a neutral posture which can not only cut down on neck and back pain but also give you a more confident look.

If you think you might need some help getting straightened out, book an appointment with me and I can test your range of motion and offer solutions through a combination of hands-on massage work and a stretching routine for at home.
